KATHMANDU, March 20: Nepali Congress President and former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala passed away at his daughters home in Mandikhatar, Kathmandu at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Minister for Irrigation Bal Krishna Khand confirmed the passing away the 86-year-ancient leader after a NC CWC meeting.

His body will be kept at the Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwor between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said. His body will be covered by the national flag.

Until then, the body will be kept at his daughter and Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala´s residence at Mandikhatar where people can pay their last homage on Saturday.

The last rites would be performed on Sunday with state honors as he was the former head of states, an emergency meeting of the cabinet chose on Saturday afternoon.

The government also declared Sunday a public holiday and chose to keep the national flag at half mast for three days. Condolence books will be kept open in Nepali diplomatic missions and consulate throughout the world for two days.

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal reached Mandikhatar to pay last homage to Koirala, who was appointed Prime Minister four times and acting head of the state after monarch was abolished.

KATHMANDU: Nearly 300 students were arrested in Babylon Disco of Sundhara on Friday morning at 10 am in a series of raids on dance bars, discos and restaurants of the capital. The raids were carried out two days after the police swooped down on X Bar in Sundhara and other dance bars on Wednesday.

The students were caught in their college and school uniforms when the police entered the bars accompanied by media persons. Students are of Sigma, Redhon, Youth Vision, Siddharth Banasthali, Golden Academy, Caspian, Prime, Nobel British Gurkha Academy and NCC among other colleges and schools in the capital. The discos usually organise parties on Friday targeting students who bunk classes to attend them.

The students have been taken into custody in Hanuman Dhoka Metropolitan Police Range and Nepal Police Club of Exhibition Road. Police said that the students were caught consuming alcoholic drinks and drugs.

It is reported that the police has begun its investigation into the incident. The proprietor of one of the discotheques has also been arrested. According to the police, the students would be subjected to medical tests for alcohol and drugs.

काठमाडौ, चैत्र १२ – पूर्वराजा ज्ञानेन्द्र शाहले राजतन्त्रको विषयमा दिएको अभिव्यक्तिप्रति प्रमुख राजनीतिक दलले आपत्ति जनाएका छन् । उनीहरूले ‘जनता पछि हट्न चाहँदैनन्’ भनेका छन् । प्रधानमन्त्री माधवकुमार नेपालले ‘दिवा सपना’ भएको टिप्पणी गरेका छन् ।

कांग्रेस र एमालेको बिहीबार सिंहदरबारमा भएको बैठकपछि संवाददाताहरूको जिज्ञासामा प्रधानमन्त्री नेपालले भने, ‘पूर्वराजाको अभिव्यक्ति दिवा सपना हो ।’

बुधबार पूर्वराजा ज्ञानेन्द्रले एक टेलिभिजनलाई अन्तरवार्ता दिँदै राजतन्त्र समाप्त भइनसकेको बताएका थिए । माओवादी उपाध्यक्ष बाबुराम भट्टराईले उनले अन्तरिम संविधानविपरीत अभिव्यक्ति दिएको भन्दै राज्यले दिएको सुविधा फिर्ता लिनुपर्ने बताएका छन् । ‘पूर्वराजाका अभिव्यक्ति अन्तरिम संविधानविपरीत छन्,’ उनले भने, ‘उनलाई जनताको कठघरामा उभ्याउनुपर्छ ।’ यसबारेमा राज्यले आफ्नो धारणा स्पष्ट गर्न पनि उनले माग गरे ।

कांग्रेस संसदीय दलका नेता रामचन्द्र पौडेलले पूर्वराजाको अभिव्यक्ति आपत्तिजनक भएको उल्लेख गरे । ‘राजाले आपत्तिजनक कुरा बोले । यो उनको दिवा सपना हो । जनतालाई उत्तेजित हुने कुरा हो,’ उनले कान्तिपुरसँग भने, ‘नेपाली जनता पछि र्फकन चाहँदैनन्, अघि बढ्न चाहन्छन् ।’ राजतन्त्रबारे उनले दिएको अभिव्यक्तिमा सत्यता नभएको पनि उनले जनाए ।

राजधानीमा आयोजित एक कार्यक्रममा माओवादीका अर्का नेता नारायणकाजी श्रेष्ठले पूर्वराजा ज्ञानेन्द्रलाई ‘जनकारबाही’ गर्ने चेतावनीसमेत दिए । ‘पूर्वराजाको हैसियतमा प्रतिक्रान्तिकारीे बाटोमा लागे ज्ञानेन्द्रले जनकारबाही भोग्नुपर्ने हुन्छ,’ उनले भने, ‘सरकारकै सेवा सुविधामा बसेर प्रतिक्रान्तिकारी षड्यन्त्रमा लाग्ने पूर्वराजाको सेवा सुविधा सरकारले खोस्नुपर्छ ।’
